Schools Cup finals set for Kingston Park stage

After six weeks of competition, the inaugural Thunder Schools Cup will draw to a close at this Sunday’s match against Workington.

A brand new competition for Yr 7 players, the cup was created in response to requests from schools participating in the Sky Try programme for further playing opportunities, with this year’s inaugural edition welcoming teams from 16 schools in tournaments for both boys and girls.

As well as welcoming some regular faces, the Thunder Schools Cup has also introduced rugby league to schools like Hexham Middle School, Oxclose Community Academy and Whickham School for the first time.

Hexham have enjoyed a particularly impressive first foray into the 13-player code, with their teams making the plate finals of both the boys and girls tournaments.

Starting from 12 Noon on Sunday, the girls’ plate final will see John Spence take on Hexham Middle School, while the cup will see Belmont take on Richard Coates.

In the boy’s competitions, Studio West will take on Hexham Middle School in the plate, while Belmont will take on Seaton Sluice in the Cup.

Belmont girls will be particularly keen to claim overall honours, after taking up the place of Whitburn Academy in the final with the South Tyneside school unable to take the place they won in the semi-finals, which features in the Thunder TV piece at the top of the page.

To make the most of their day once the on-field action has concluded for the participating pupils, each player will be able to stay back and see Newcastle Thunder in action as they aim to continue their climb up the League 1 table.

Family and friends of the school’s players can also enjoy the game alongside their kids, with special ticket offers in place and full details available from the team’s coach.
