Trial-ist Clayton shines through Thunder pre-season. General January 7, 2019 As Newcastle Thunder’s squad depth increases and places become more competitive, Connor Clayton is one who has recently been identified for his efforts in training. Connor is currently on trial at the club and has set good impressions as the Newcastle Thunder prepare for a huge season. The hardworking player was developed through the Halifax youth system alongside ex-Thunderman Tom Shaw where they both eventually played together under Jason Payne at Northumbria University. Starting out his career in the middles, the 25-year-old has made the switch to hooker ahead of 2019, which sees him attempting to stake a claim to a place in the squad, by measuring up against players of the calibre of Evan Simons and Keal Carlile. His efforts so far have drawn the praise of head coach Jason Payne, who is keen to evaluate the player in Thunder’s upcoming pre-season campaign. Payne said: “Connor is someone I’ve known for many years through Northumbria where he captained for a while. He is a great leader with tons of potential which is propelled by his professional behaviour when training. The change of his position from a middle to hooker has been working well and I’m looking forward to see how he performs in the upcoming friendlies.”. Newcastle Thunder look ahead to the first pre-season game of 2019 where we face Wakefield on the 19th January, 2PM kick off.
