In Opposition – York City Knights General September 12, 2017 The Kingstone Press League 1 Super 8s draw to a close this Sunday with a trip to the Minster City in store for Newcastle Thunder as they take on York City Knights in a must win game at Bootham Crescent (KO 3pm) Thunder are part of a three way fight for the fifth and final play-off position and will seal that spot if they take a win against James Ford’s side, Toronto beat Doncaster and Keighley fail to win against Barrow. It sets up an exciting final day and guarantees whatever happens, it will be an afternoon filled with drama. The Knights have proven to be a solid outfit in a season where originally, they weren’t even included in the fixture list, following a protracted change of ownership over the winter. Under the stewardship of Ford they’ve taken 12 wins from 21 and have been the only team so far to take a win against the behemoth that is the Toronto Wolfpack, though their Super 8s form has not been of the standard they will have been demanding. At home though, they have made hay, with the Wolfpack win backed up with victories against Workington and a draw against Doncaster. The Knights will head into Sunday’s game off the back of a 26-16 loss away to Whitehaven, but already qualified for the promotion play offs. Having taking solid wins in their last two fixtures, Thunder will be looking to right the wrongs of Magic Friday back in May, when a great start and end to the game gave way to a disappointing middle and with it a 18-22 loss in front of over 2,000 fans.
