The case for Whitehaven

Fifteen weeks out from the last home game of 2019, Newcastle Thunder are back in action at Kingston Park Stadium this weekend.

Hosting newly promoted Betfred Championship side Whitehaven RLFC, Simon Finnigan’s squad will renew rivalries with the West Cumbrian side in the first on-field action of the year for both clubs.

But why should the North East public join us for Saturday’s 3pm kick-off?

First glimpse at this year’s squad.

With a host of new faces coming into the Thunder ranks, Saturday gives fans their first chance to see some of these in action, with seven new players coming in from outside the club.

Looking sharp in pre-season, those involved will be keen to impress coaches and fans alike against Championship opposition.

It’s on your season membership.

Entry to Saturday’s game is included in 2020 season ticket memberships, so if you hold one of these, your place in the crowd is already booked.

All fans have been sent a match ticket for Saturday’s game, with season cards due to follow by the end of the month. If you have not received your ticket through the post by Saturday, simply pop to the box office on arrival at the ground and the staff will sort out a ticket to get you in.

The opposition.

Thunder and Whitehaven served up two enthralling matches in Betfred League 1 last season, with the clubs playing out a 12-all draw in Cumbria back in April before Newcastle dug in to take a 26-20 win on the return match in June.

With the Cumbrians preparing to embark on their first season after promotion in the second tier of rugby league and Thunder looking to build on the foundations they laid in 2019, two high quality sides will be taking to the field this weekend.
