Thunder set for 1895 Cup kick off

Newcastle Thunder launch into a brand new competition at their next home game this weekend, as Simon Finnigan’s men take on Keighley Cougars in the first round of the brand new 1895 Cup.

A competition for teams in the Betfred Championship and League 1 that guarantees two non-Super League clubs and their supporters will experience the magic of Wembley, the 1895 Cup will add to the occasion of the Coral Challenge Cup Final day, as fans from across the sport come together to celebrate Rugby League.

The tournament consists of five rounds, with eight League 1 teams kicking things off this coming weekend, with Doncaster, Hunslet, Oldham, West Wales, Whitehaven and Workington joining Thunder and the Cougars.

Round 2 will introduce the 12 English teams from the Betfred Championship who with the winners from round 1 will play eight ties. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will follow in June and July with the final to will be played at Wembley Stadium on the 24 August, the same day as the 2019 Challenge Cup final.

The introduction of the 1895 Cup means that there will be three Finals at Wembley Stadium in August – as the Steven Mullaney Memorial Match (the RFL Champion Schools Final for Year 7s), which has long been established as a popular curtain-raiser to the Challenge Cup Final, will also remain a key part of the day.

As a cup fixture, Saturday’s game is only included in junior season ticket packages of Thunder & Keighley, with all adult and concessionary ticket holders needing to purchase a ticket to gain entry to the game.
