Turland takes up new Thunder contract

Newcastle Thunder have announced the retention of the services of Dan Turland for the 2018 season, as the countdown to the 2018 kick off continues.

A product of Thunder’s Under 19 system and Gateshead Storm, the 24-year-old has steadily developed over recent seasons and will provide further options to Jason Payne in Thunder’s pack.

Having made four appearances for the club to date, Turland has already gained a taste of Kingstone Press League 1 and the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup and will be looking to gain further experience of these competitions in 2018.

Eligible to play for Scotland, and a key player for Northumbria University, his performances for the team currently top of the BUCS Premier North table have seen him named captain of the Scotland students team and train with the full Bravehearts squad during the 2016 Four Nations.

Speaking about the player’s retention, Thunder head coach Jason Payne said: “Dan is local lad who has been involved in our set up for a few years now, he is a tough guy with plenty to offer.

“He had a great tournament at the Student World Cup last year and hopefully that will have given him some confidence. Dan was with me for two years at Northumbria where he put in some huge performances, I’m hopeful he can recreate some of them this season for Thunder.”
