MATCH REPORT – Thunder U19’s start season with an emphatic win

Lewis Howe writes:

A great start to the under 19s season as the young Thunder side tame the Tigers during a heated match which saw both sides leave it all on the field and Thunder coming back from an 18-0 disadvantage.

Castleford started the game aggressive and fast which left Thunder 6-0 down 6 minutes into the game after a line break and a conversion.

Things were not looking good for our U19s as the home side managed to score again in the 10th minute with yet another conversion bringing the score to 12-0 and then another converted try at minute 15 taking them to 18-0.

Our U19s seemingly completely changed in attitude after such a slow start and after a bone-crunching tackle followed by a 70 metre run by Alex Donaghy Thunder were on the offensive, eventually resulting in Isaac Nokes crashing through the Tigers defence and scoring.

After an unconverted try this brings the score 18-4 by minute 20.

Following multiple well-defended sets by Thunder, their attack once again proves strong as Alex Donaghy collects the ball and gives it to winger Anthony Dyne who flies over defenders to score another try in the left corner.

Another unconverted kick brings us to 18-8 and Thunder back in the arm wrestle.

After multiple penalties by the Tigers, Thunder find themselves within the host’s 20m trench to which Alex Donaghy capitalises on a scrambled defensive line to send several Castleford players the opposite direction and scoring under the posts.

After converting his own try, Donaghy raises the score to 18-14 at minute 37. Just before halftime Castleford manage to score with another conversion.

At the halfway point Castleford Tigers have some breathing room from a very strong Thunder side after our U19s bounce back from a slow start.

Half-time score: 24-14

As the second half got underway Thunder look to overwhelm the Tigers with an impressive defensive set proving to topple the Tiger’s offensive efforts and gaining possession.

Soon after this Malik Steele bursts over defenders from close range and scores narrowing the score to 24-20 to the Tigers after a converted kick by Donaghy.

Not so soon after again Malik Steele drills into the Tigers defence, scoring a try. To add to this, Alex Donaghy converts the kick nudging Thunder up the scorecards as they lead now 24-26.

A Castleford player is given a yellow card at minute 60 leaving them with 12 men. Thunder extend their lead as Alex Donaghy pounces onto the ball after being kicked.

Donaghy once again converts bringing our U19s to a 28-32 lead. The Tigers quickly responded with their own try bringing us to a tight 28-32 lead at minute 66 to Thunder.

Our Thunder side manage to comeback via another try by Isaac Nokes who runs past a defending Tiger to score. Alex Donaghy converts, giving Thunder a comfortable 10 point lead as the full-time whistle blows.

Thunder walk away with a hard-fought victory after withering the early storm from Castleford.

Final  time score: 28-38
