2020 Betfred League 1 fixtures announced

Newcastle Thunder will kick off the 2020 Betfred League 1 season at home to West Wales Raiders next February, as their 20-match schedule for the new campaign has been confirmed.

Opening against a squad that they have not lost to since 2013, Newcastle will be hopeful of making a winning start to a campaign where they will once again be aiming to be one of the front running teams.

2020 is a season where there will be added action throughout with Golden Point Extra Time available in all League 1 fixtures next season – but with a different twist.

When a game is level at the sounding of the final hooter, each team will take one point for earning a draw – with a third competition point then made available to the first team to score in two five-minute periods of extra time.

After kicking off at home, Thunder’s first away trip of the league once again comes in round two and as in 2019, will see them face Coventry and look to avenge what was a shock loss against the Bears in the campaign just gone.

March sees Workington Town come across from West Cumbria on Sunday 8th and Thunder head to London Skolars on Saturday 28th before the visit of Keighley Cougars throws up an Easter extravaganza of rugby at Kingston Park.

Thunder will face the Cougars on Easter Sunday, while their rugby union stablemates the Falcons will take on Yorkshire Carnegie on Good Friday with both games 3pm kick offs.

Rochdale Hornets are the first of the two sides relegated from the Betfred Championship that Thunder will come up against as the come to Kingston Park on April 26 before May begins with a trip to face Hunslet at the South Leeds Stadium on Sunday 3rd

With Magic Weekend returning to St James’ Park over the spring bank holiday weekend, Thunder will once again be able to be part of rugby league’s big weekend on Tyneside as Doncaster RLFC visit over that weekend.

The date and kick off time for the game that follows the away fixture at Barrow have yet to be confirmed, with Thunder working with Super League Europe to make the most of the opportunity afforded by the even returning to what has become its spiritual home.

Reaching the half-way point of the season with the trip to North Wales Crusaders on May 31st, June will see Hunslet as the only home game of the month on Sunday 14th, with back to back away games taking Newcastle to Keighley and West Wales on consecutive weekends.

July sees the return fixtures against the Crusaders (Sunday 5th) and Coventry (July 26th) sandwich the cross-Pennine clash at Workington (Sunday 12th) while August will see Thunder make the trip to Rochdale on August 2 and host the Skolars on Saturday August 8.

The final away game of the regular season comes against Doncaster over the August bank holiday before the home meeting with Barrow Raiders rounds out the schedule.

It shapes up to be a blockbuster conclusion to the season, with the Dons and the Raiders full expected to be amongst the teams challenging for the title and promotion.
