Betts confirmed as Thunder DOR

Denis Betts will retain the helm at Newcastle Thunder in 2020, with the North East club confirming their director of rugby has extended his tenure for the upcoming Betfred League 1 season.

The former Wigan Warriors and Widnes Vikings Head Coach and England Rugby League Assistant Coach joined the club in March 2019 when he assumed charge of all first team affairs at the club.

Overseeing the rugby department at Kingston Park Stadium, Betts was responsible for much what saw 2019 become the club’s most successful season in over a decade, including the signing of head coach Simon Finnigan is confirmed for 2020.

With a fiercely competitive BetFred League 1 season in prospect, the retention of Betts alongside his head coach will provide Thunder with stability in the backroom, as they look to build on what was achieved in the season just past.

Speaking about the appointment Thunder Chairman Mick Hogan said: “We knew we had secured the services of one of the top British coaches within the sport, when we signed Denis and he has done nothing but demonstrate that in his time at the club so far.

“It is fantastic news to have Denis agree to lead the Thunder for the upcoming season and build on what he, Simon and the players achieved last year. He has also been instrumental in setting the new Thunder Vision and will play a key role in establishing a first-class culture throughout the club”

Denis Betts commented: “I was delighted to have joined such an ambitious club as Newcastle Thunder when I signed and I am just as happy to have agreed a new deal for the new season.

The club has tremendous plans for the future, together with great facilities and a strong academy set up and I’m looking forward to building on what we achieved last season playing an entertaining style of rugby.

“There has been a lot of hard work put in already since the start of October and we’re all set for a strong pre-season and hitting the ground running next February.”
