League 1 campaign to begin in Coventry

Newcastle Thunder’s first match of the Betfred League 1 season will now be the away trip to Coventry Bears following the postponement of last Sunday’s Coral Challenge Cup third round tie against Keighley Cougars.

One of a host of sporting events to fall foul of the weather as Storm Ciara battered the UK, RFL operational rules decree that Challenge Cup fixtures take precedence over league matches.

As a result, and with the fourth round of rugby’s oldest knock-out competition taking place on the weekend of February 22/23, Saturday’s match against West Wales Raiders will now not be played on its original date.

Thunder will instead aim to qualify for a meeting with Siddal ARLFC in the next stage of the tournament when the rearranged fixture against the Cougars is played on Sunday afternoon (3pm KO)

An alternative date for the game against the Raiders is currently being identified, with details set to be confirmed in the coming days.
