Rhinos & Whitehaven confirmed for pre season matches

Newcastle Thunder will face up to Super League and Championship opposition as part of the pre-season preparations for 2020, with Leeds Rhinos and Whitehaven set to be hosted at Kingston Park Stadium in the new year.

Thunder will play both sides in January as they look to build on a 2019 campaign that produced their best season in over a decade.

West Cumbria’s top team will be the first to make the trip to NE13, when they provide the opposition on Saturday 11th January in a 3pm kick-off.

A pair of evenly matched sides in 2019, Thunder and Whitehaven played out a 12 all draw over at the Recreation Ground in April before Newcastle managed to take the spoils from the return game, edging to a 26-20 triumph in June.

The Rhinos meanwhile will continue the tradition of Thunder taking on a team from a Super League club in pre-season, as the Headingley based squad become the fifth club in succession to provide a high-profile challenge to Newcastle before the cut and thrust of the league gets underway.

Taking place on Sunday 26th January and kicking off at 3pm, it is a game that no rugby league fan will want to miss.

Tickets for Thunder’s home pre-season fixtures will be on sale soon, with both included in all season ticket memberships purchased by 17:00 on Friday 6th December. After this time, the Leeds Rhinos fixture will only be included with Premier season ticket memberships.

Starting from just £120 (£250 for premier), memberships also give access to all 10 of Thunder’s Betfred League 1 matches next season, with a host of additional benefits.

For the most committed fans, there is also the new for 2020 premier season ticket, which also includes a new replica home shirt, tickets to the Dacia Magic Weekend, Coral Challenge Cup final and four hospitality upgrades to games at Kingston Park.

Speaking on the confirmed opposition, head coach Simon Finnigan said, “Whitehaven will be excellent preparation for the upcoming season as they were the benchmark team in League 1 last year so it will be a very beneficial run out.

“Leeds will offer us the ideal test before we start the new season and to go against players from a full-time environment, which will be ideal preparation.”
