SIGNING – Alex Rowe joins from Batley for 2019

Newcastle Thunder have secured the services of formidable front row forward Alex Rowe from Batley Bulldogs as their squad-building for the 2019 Betfred League 1 season continues.

Rowe has been a mainstay in the Batley front row since joining the club for the 2013 season and has been a key component in the Mount Pleasant-based side firmly establishing themselves as a top-six club in the Betfred Championship.

Bringing over 160 games worth of experience with him from that division, he is a hardened operator that will complement the players already recruited or retained in the pack.

A Maltese international, Rowe has also played at the highest levels of the game with stints at London Broncos and Castleford Tigers in Super League. His move to become a full Thunder player marks Rowe’s second stint on Tyneside, having played on loan for Thunder back in the early 2000s

Speaking on his latest signing, head coach Jason Payne said: “I’m delighted that Alex will be signing for us. He is the big, aggressive front rower that we’ve been keen on signing. He brings a huge amount of experience having been proven in the Championship and I’m sure he will add a great deal to our pack which is shaping up really well with the addition of both Alex and Jared and what we are hoping to retain from the current squad.

Alex is a player that I know from my time at Castleford where we played together briefly and I know what a great character he is to have around the place. He doesn’t just deliver on the field he is a great bloke to have around off the field in the changing rooms with a great sense of humour and I’m sure that will make him really popular with the players and the fans.

Rowe is Thunder’s tenth player to be confirmed in Thunder’s 2019 squad joining Jack Aldous, Jared Blanke, Rhys Clarke, Liam Finn, Remy Marginet, Liam McAvoy, Evan Simons, David Weetman and Lewis Young in the ranks.
