SIGNING – Clarke commits to 2020

Club stalwart Rhys Clarke will embark on his ninth season as a Newcastle Thunder player on 2020 after agreeing to a new deal to remain at Kingston Park Stadium.

The 28-year-old forward has made over 140 appearances for the club across two stints on Tyneside in a career that started back in 2009.

Adding in his appearances for York City Knights and Whitehaven, Clarke has played in over 200 matches and brings a wealth of knowledge as one of the most experienced players at the club.

Part of a core of local talent at Simon Finnigan’s disposal and a big character within the squad, Clarke is confident of Thunder building on the solid foundations they laid in 2019.

He said: “It was a good season last year and although I’m 28, I learned a lot from some of the new experienced players that came in and from the new coaches and it is good to keep learning.

“We had a good run at the end of the season and hopefully we can continue that on into next year. If we can start with the form that we finished with, we can be in a good position.

Head coach Simon Finnigan said: “Rhys had a really good year last season and he should be happy with himself. He was playing very well and is a natural rugby player and I love having “that sort of people in the squad.

Even though he’s experiences, he’s still got things he can fix, but there are things I can’t tell him to do or coach him to do that he will just produce on the field. Also he’s from the area so I am more than pleased that he’s signed on for another year.”

Clarke joins Bob Beswick, Alex Clegg, Sean Croston, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Adam Lawton, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton and Lewis Young in the ranks for 2020.
