SIGNING – Clegg confirmed for 2020

Free scoring winger Alex Clegg will be hoping to be a big part of Newcastle Thunder’s success again in 2020, with the young academy graduate agreeing new terms at Kingston Park Stadium off the back of a breakthrough 2019.

The 20-year-old made himself an almost indispensable feature for the club as he made 25 appearances out of a possible 28 and placed himself as the second-top try scorer of the season with an impressive 19 four pointers to his name.

Able to play at fullback, centre or wing, Clegg is a versatile option who first came to the club back in 2018, joining the academy after moving to the region to study at Northumbria University.

His form this year built impressively on his first in the region back in 2018, where he marked himself out as one to watch by becoming a key fixture in the University side as they triumphed in the BUCS grand final, before making his Thunder first-team debut.

After forming a potent partnership on the left edge with Kieran Gill, Clegg is tipped to make further progress in the new year and develop his game further still by head coach Simon Finnigan.

He said: “He was one of our most consistent players last season and I was keen to keep him on board. I like a lot of the things he brings to our game and he is an exciting player who has huge amounts of potential still to be reached.

“He enjoyed himself last season, he is willing to learn, and he is a winger that we can put a lot of work into.”

Clegg said: “It was a great year personally.  It was my first season at this sort of level, so it was great to originally get a few games under my belt and then secure that position and go on to have a good run.  I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to get started again.

“I’ve got a few things to work on, still being young but Finny has been great with me saying what I need to improve on each week, so I have to take everything that I did last season that worked forward into the new season and add that other stuff into my game.

“I’m really looking forward to building that up week by week in pre-season and being ready for the games in the new year.”

Clegg is Thunder’s 13th signing for 2020, and joins Bob Beswick, Sean Croston, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton and Lewis Young in the ranks.
