SIGNING: Clegg steps up into first team ranks

Thunder academy product Alex Clegg will ply his trade in the first team in 2019 after the young utility back signed a senior deal with the Kingston Park club.

Able to play at fullback, centre or wing, he is a versatile option and has made an eye-catching start to his time with the club that has earned his promotion into the first team roster.

Joining the academy in 2018 after moving to the region to study at Northumbria University, Clegg is a product of Stanley Rangers where he played most of his amateur rugby league and also enjoyed a period at Castleford Lock Lane before coming to the North East.

He made an instant impression in his first year in the region, becoming a key fixture for Northumbria University as they triumphed in the BUCS grand final, before making his Thunder first-team debut at the end of the year.

Scoring a try on debut in the club’s record 98-6 win over West Wales Raiders, the youngster has set the expectation bar high as he aims to regularly break into the match-day ranks.

Speaking on his new deal, Clegg said: “I’m really excited to be given this opportunity and to be part of the first team squad at Thunder and I am hoping to continue to learn from the experienced backs in the team.

“I was given my debut at the end of last year and I hope that I can compete for a place and play as many games as I can. I learned a lot in the academy last season and working with Michael Heap really helped my game and my switch to fullback so hopefully, I can keep on doing that.

Clegg joins Mo Agoro, Harry Aldous, Jack Aldous, Jared Blanke, Joe Brown, Keal Carlile, Jed Charlton, Rhys Clarke, Dan Coates, Jy-Mel Coleman, Tyler Craig, Liam Finn, Conor Fitzsimmons, Kieran Hudson, Kieran Gill, Sam Luckley, Remy Marginet, Liam McAvoy, Aaron Ollett, Liam Richmond, Alex Rowe, Niall Sidney, Evan Simons, Misi Taulapapa, David Weetman and Lewis Young in Thunder’s 2019 squad.
