SIGNING – Lawton comes in from Salford for 2020

Newcastle Thunder have secured a BIG signing for the 2020 season as the club bring Adam Lawton to the North East from Super League grand finalists Salford Red Devils.

Standing at 6’ 7” the towering forward broke onto the rugby league scene in 2013 as a 20-year-old product of the Widnes Vikings’ junior system and impressed, scoring nine tries in 12 appearances in all competitions for Widnes.

After an impressive first season Lawton then opted to take a sabbatical in Australia, during which time he played at Queensland Cup level with Redcliffe Dolphins before returning to the UK to play at amateur level with Widnes West Bank.

Rediscovering his love for the game, he was snapped up by Salford Red Devils for their outstanding 2019 campaign and featured in matches against Catalan, Wakefield, Warrington and Wigan.

Lawton also spent time on loan in the Betfred Championship with Rochdale and Swinton, adding to the experience he gained of that division at Workington Town back in 2013.

A player who uses his impressive physical attributes to bring size and power to his pack, he is also a skilful individual who will provide an additional threat with the ball in hand in Newcastle’s forward ranks.

Thunder head coach Simon Finnigan said: “I’m pleased with the addition off Ada to our squad, he brings Super League experience and will add to the strike we already have on our edges.”

Speaking on his move to the North East, Lawton said, I spoke to Denis and Finny during the year and I’m happy with the move now that it has all happened. I’ve worked with Denis before and I like him as a coach, so it is good to link back up with him and it’s a new fresh challenge here.

Adam joins Bob Beswick, Alex Clegg, Sean Croston, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton and Lewis Young in the ranks for 2020.
