SIGNING – Simons set for season six

Evan Simons will enter his sixth season as a Newcastle Thunder player in 2020, after the 28-year-old extended his stay on Tyneside for the 2020 Betfred League 1 season.

Simons has become a key player for the club since joining from Hemel Stags for the 2015 season and is a firm favourite with supporters.

Making over 100 appearances for Newcastle to date, the former Widnes Vikings junior is a potent attacking threat with 43 tries to his name with many coming from his trademark snipes from dummy half.

Playing much of his rugby league as a hooker, Simons demonstrated his adaptability and versatility in 2019 making several appearances at loose forward and adding another string to his bow.

After putting pen to paper on his contract extension, Simons says his main target is to progress up the rugby league pyramid and that he is looking forward to working under director of rugby Denis Betts and head coach Simon Finnigan during this year’s pre-season preparations.

Simons said: “I want to be here because I want to win something, and I think next year is the time that we can do that. We have been saying that for a couple of years, but it does feel that where the club is now, we’re in a good position.

“Denis is a legend of the game and it’s good to have he and Simon at the club, we know how passionate people associated with the North West and Widnes are about rugby league so it is good for that to come into the North East.

“They are going to have a full pre-season with us this year and we finished last season quite strongly. They have shown what they can do, and we can take all of that into next year and hopefully, when we’re in the same situations we can draw on that experience and come away with the better results.”

Evan joins Bob Beswick, Rhys Clarke, Alex Clegg, Sean Croston, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Adam Lawton, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton and Lewis Young in the ranks for 2020.
