Thunder style excites Finnigan

Simon Finnigan declared himself satisfied with his team’s effort on Sunday afternoon, as Newcastle Thunder beat a youthful Leeds Rhinos side 52-8 at Kingston Park Stadium.

Giving a run out to 25 of the 28-man squad he has assembled for the 2020 season against a side made up of the Rhinos talented next generation, Finnigan was pleased with the level of the challenge provided and how his charges met with it.

FHe said: “Leeds caused us some trouble, particularly with their late footwork and the way they carried the ball and they were a good challenge for us.  They brought quite a bit to us which could have caught us off guard, but I thought we did alright.”

Running in 10 tries over the course of the afternoon seven of these came during the second half, as Thunder’s players began to click and combine in style with Finnigan happy with what his side put on show.

He added: “We’ve not done a lot with the ball, its only our second friendly but we are going to score some good tries this year.  We have some points in us and good rugby in us and its just the fine line between knowing when to play, when to push it and when to not, but I think we did a good job of that today.”
