Thunder U15s in SL academy action

Four members of Newcastle Thunder’s U15 setup will be in action for Super League outfits this Friday, further underlying the quality of players being discovered and developed in the North East.

Half back Alex Donaghy will line up for Leeds Rhinos against club-mates Nathan Clemmitt, Mark Roberts and Fergus Simpson as the Headingley based club take on Huddersfield Giants as their impressive seasons continue on an upward curve.

The four have been part of a Thunder squad that have shown continued progress over the course of 2017 in Under 16 Scholarship programme fixtures, playing  a year group up and against Super League opposition in the form of Leeds Rhinos, Salford Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity

It is further good news for half back Donaghy and back row Clemmitt, who last week were selected to attend the England Rugby League National Performance Training Day and are in contention to feature in the forthcoming international fixture against Wales.

Thunder’s Academy Manager, Michael Heap, said “we have been working hard to build relationships with some of the Super League academies in order to provide our players with additional development opportunities.

“Thanks to the co-operation of both Simon Bell at Leeds and Andy Kelly at Huddersfield, it will be a fantastic opportunity for these players to gain some experience of a different environment, working with different coaches and players and they should return to Thunder’s Scholarship programme as more rounded players and individuals.”
