Jake Shorrocks will join Newcastle Thunder for the 2021 Betfred Championship season, as the scrum half adds to the wealth of Super League experience that has been assembled at Kingston Park Stadium this winter.

The club’s fourth capture from Wigan Warriors, Shorrocks is a half with a strong kicking game, who poses a potent running threat with the ball in hand and has a pass with plenty of zip.

He has demonstrated his abilities in 37 games in the top-flight since he made his debut back in June 2016 against Widnes Vikings for the Warriors.

Going on to make a further 11 appearances as Shaun Wane’s side enjoyed a title-winning season, Shorrocks breakthrough was halted by a knee injury at the start of the 2017 season that prevented him from adding more than one Super League cap to his tally.

Spending most of 2018 on loan at Salford Red Devils, Shorrocks impressed as he bounced back from a season out from playing and went on to make a further 13 appearances for Wigan where he returned for the 2019 campaign.

With experience of the Betfred Championship from loan spells with Workington Town and Swinton Lions, Shorrocks is an exciting talent who arrives on Tyneside eager to progress his own career as he helps Thunder achieve their own ambitions.

Speaking about his move, Shorrocks said: “I’m really excited to sign for Thunder. I’ve reached a point where I want to develop myself as a player and coming to the north east is a really exciting prospect.

“I’ve read in the media the goals the club are setting for themselves and speaking to Denis and Eamon, they explained a bit more about that to me and I can’t wait for us to get started.

“Achieving the goals that Thunder are setting will be exciting for everyone involved and for rugby league as a whole and being involved in that is something I really want to be part of.

“Denis and Eamon are putting together a very capable team and it will be good to test ourselves against the established teams in the Championship. I’ll be doing everything I can to help the club compete.”

Director of rugby Denis Betts said: “Jake is an established half with Super League experience and has come from a great background.

“He is a player whose ambition matches that of the club, and he sees us as somewhere we he can advance his career by being a part of us achieving our goals. He is an exciting talent with an excellent kicking game and is very strong with the ball in hand.
