SQUAD ANNOUNCMENT – 1895 Cup round one.

Simon Finnigan has named his 19 man squad who will feature in the first round of the newly formed 1895 Cup, a competition that provides Championship and League One clubs with a chance to play at the prestigious Wembley stadium on Challenge Cup final day.

Keighley Cougars will be making the trip up to Kingston Park tomorrow, with the game kicking off at 2:30pm and are in fine form.

With the Cougars winning three of the previous five meetings between the two teams, it will prove a tasty fixture for the #ThunderFamily.

Tomorrow’s fixture will also bring two special moments as 2018 academy product Dan Coates makes his first-team debut and Joe Brown equals Robin Peers record of 218 appearances for the club.

Speaking about Brown’s inclusion, head coach Simon Finnigan said: “I hope he has a good day and hope we have a good day for him. I’m sure he will say that it’s not about him, the type of person that he is, but a lot of the weekend should be about him because he has earned it.

“It doesn’t happen often these days that someone plays record appearances for a club, they move around a lot of clubs in the modern game, so it’s a huge achievement and a high honour in my book, I would be very proud if I was him and the club is.”

Looking ahead to the debut of another young product of the Thunder Academy, Finnigan added:

“I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen in training, I’ve not seen him live so that’s the opportunity I want to take this weekend and the cup gives us that chance. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have given him that chance; it’s not that he’s given the chance because it’s a cup game.  I like what I’ve seen in training and I want to see what he can do in the game.

“We all as young lads get a chance at some point and you hope that they take that opportunity with both hands and put pressure on myself and the squad around him by putting his hand up. He has got to go out there and enjoy himself.

“It’s his first game so I’m not expecting him to be a world-beater, but I am expecting him to do what I am asking every other first-team player to for Newcastle.”

Ahead of the first team game at 2:30pm, Thunder’s U19s kick off at 12:30pm against St Helens.

Tickets are available online, calling 0871 2266060 or by heading into the Kingston Park Ticket Office.
