Utility forward Mikey Wood will return to Tyneside for the 2021 season, after to extend his stay at Kingston Park Stadium having moved north from Bradford Bulls for 2020

The 23-year-old added five appearances to his Thunder tally at the start of the year, having played 13 games whilst on-loan from Huddersfield Giants in 2016 and 2017 and was an ever present in the starting 13.

A player with physical presence, Wood is equally adept playing both at prop and second-row and is a former England Academy player who made two Super League appearances for the Giants and has over 50 games under his belt with Bradford Bulls.

That experience will be of huge value to Thunder, as they take to the field in the game’s second tier in 2021 and Wood is eager to get back to work.

He said: “I can’t wait to be back playing with the Thunder lads after the disappointment that we never got to finish the season this year.

“I loved every minute that I played. I’ve been training hard during lockdown – a lot of gym work and running- but I’m looking forward to starting some field training with the boys.

“I think we’ve the potential to do really well this season and it will be great to play alongside some of the new talent that has been signed.”

Director of rugby Denis Betts said: “Mikey is a committed front rower who works hard and has a lot of drive and ambition.

“He is good at the play-the-ball, has a good work ethic and is the sort of player that you want in your squad, so I am pleased he will be back with us for next season.”

Wood joins Connor Bailey, Bob Beswick, Joe Brown, Rhys Clarke, Alex Clegg, Reece Dean, Alex Donaghy, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Evan Hodgson, Kieran Hudson, Jack Johnson, Liam McAvoy, Colton Roche, Evan Simons, Cian Tyrer, Calum Turner, Nathan Wilde, Sam Wilde, Matty Wright & Lewis Young in the squad for the 2021 Betfred Championship season.
