MATCH REPORT – Coventry Bears 32 – 28 Newcastle Thunder

After a disappointing first round, Thunder were left searching for their first win heading into round two.

Coventry Bears started the game at a blistering pace which enabled them to take an early advantage through three tries within the opening 20 minutes.

Elliott Hall’s electric brace was joined with Jacob Jones also going over the whitewash leaving Thunder trailing from the off.

The visitors eventually found their groove and ran three tries past the Bears within a 10 minutes window.

Alex Clegg scored his third try of the season through aggressive carries from Jack Aldous and Misi Taulapapa cutting through the midfield.

Liam Finn then orchestrated a play that was flashed out wide before it was snapped back to Remy Marginet who lofted a kick into the opposite corner where Clegg was waiting.

He collected and slammed the ball down for Thunder’s first try.

Mo Agoro and Evan Simons also added to the score sheet and with Finn’s successful conversion attempts, Thunder found themselves all square with the Bears and back in the game.

With less than three minutes until the half time buzzer, it was the hosts who regained the lead through another Nick Newman break before offloading to his support in the shape of Rob Butler.

Heading down the tunnel, the Bears were glowing with confidence and it would be a big second-half performance needed by Newcastle Thunder if they were to salvage anything from this game.

The second half erupted into action as Thunder were first on the score sheet through a Finn solo.

With his own kick being spilt by the Bear’s fullback, the ball found it’s way back into the veteran’s hands as he came charging on to it.

After converting his own try, Thunder found themselves all square with the Bears when going into the final third.

However, it was Coventry who demonstrated strong character as they scored a further two tries through Hayden Freeman and Newman to extend their lead.

Thunder managed to score one late consolation try through Liam McAvoy who crashed his way over the line but the Bears were able to hold out for the remaining five minutes, condemning Thunder to a second consecutive loss of the season.
