Dent moves north for 2018

Newcastle Thunder’s have added extra quality to their back division for the 2018 League 1 season, after completing the signing of Ben Dent from York City Knights.

The 26-year-old, who took up the sport aged 18 with amateur side New Earswick is adept across an array of positions, though the wing and fullback berths have been where most of his games have been played.

A German international and an arch-finisher, he arrives at Kingston Park Stadium having made 79 appearances for the Knights since 2012 and aiming to cement himself into Thunder’s first team.

Making the move up the A19 following six years in the Minster city, Dent highlights the environment provided by Thunder as a key factor in his move.

Dent said: “The main attraction of Newcastle was the attitude, commitment and professionalism that the club provides the players with and I’d like to thank Jason and the club for the opportunity to show what I’m capable of doing.

“The squad looks like one that can compete at the top of this league and probably the championship and I want to try and cement a first-team berth while doing everything I can for the club to become better.”

Thunder head coach Jason Payne said: “I’m delighted Ben has decided to take us up on our offer for this season. I’m a big fan of him and the way he plays, he makes good decisions with the ball in hand and comes up with some big plays in defence.

He is hungry to be successful, is in great shape and has been training really well. Ben’s addition further strengthens our back line and means we will have lots of competition for places and his ability to play fullback, wing, centre and in the halves gives us great versatility in how we can best use him during the year.
