McAvoy makes North East move

Newcastle Thunder have added further quality to their forward stocks for 2017, after completing a deal with loose forward Liam McAvoy for the 2017 season.

The 24-year-old joins Thunder from West Cumbrian rivals Workington Town, where he has spent the last three seasons.

He brings with him a wealth of experience to Thunder with 98 Championship and Challenge Cup appearances to his name and a nomination for Kingstone Press Championship young player of the year in 2014.

A former junior at Bradford Bull and Leeds Rhinos, McAvoy is a highly regarded young player and represented the England academy side on their 2012 tour of Australia.

A strong and tough athlete who runs hard in attack and puts in big defensive hits, McAvoy is a player who is respected within changing rooms by players and coaches alike.

The Maryport native is Thunder’s third new signing for 2017 and eighth confirmed squad member overall, joining Harry Aldous, Jack Aldous, Joe Brown, Rhys Clarke, Vincent Rennie, Tom Reudiger, Kruse Robinson and Aaron Teroi in committing to the club for the new campaign.

Season Tickets to see Newcastle Thunder in action during 2017 are on sale now, starting from £100 for adults and will include home Kingstone Press League 1 fixtures.
