SIGNING – Charlton returns for 2020

Jed Charlton returns to the Thunder ranks for 2020, with the second row putting pen to paper on a new deal that keeps the academy graduate at the club for a second senior season.

A product of Gateshead Storm, Charlton captained the Under 19s in 2018 and earned his promotion to the first team ranks after making his debut appearances for the senior side against Oldham, Doncaster and West Wales Raiders.

Impressing in those fixtures, Charlton added to his tally this season in the 1895 cup match against York and has shown he retains plenty of scope to develop further.

Having missed only a handful of games since coming onto Thunder’s Academy system as an Under 15, he proved to be a mainstay of age grade teams throughout his junior years.

An aggressive player, the Northumbria University Student’s first team appearances to date have shown him to be well suited to the demands of League 1 with further evolution expected in the upcoming season.

Looking forward to the challenges of establishing himself in the first team, Charlton said: “Hopefully I’ll get a lot more opportunities in the new season.

It was a tough season last year, but it was understandable with some of the players we had in like Joel Edwards, it is hard to compete with such a high calibre, but I’m hoping I can step up and start making a regular name for myself in the first team squad.

“There was a lot of learning and growing done last year and seeing where I need to improve, so hopefully I can take that forward and make next year a good season for myself.”

Simon Finnigan said: “Jed was with us all year and did a good job even if we weren’t necessarily able to give him enough games because of the restrictions we have with bringing players back from amateur clubs.

“He is here from the start in pre-season so has a chance to push for a first team spot, but then we have the added opportunities available with the Reserves so hopefully, Jed is going to push on next season.”

Charlton joins Bob Beswick, Rhys Clarke, Alex Clegg, Sean Croston, Ashley Gibson, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Adam Lawton, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Evan Simons, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton, David Weetman, Mikey Wood and Lewis Young in the ranks for 2020.
