Newcastle Thunder’s academy has a new first team graduate as half-back Alex Donaghy signs his first senior contract with the club.
The first player ever to feature at all levels of Thunder’s academy, Donaghy made his first team debut back in 2019 in a pre-season friendly against Wakefield.
His first competitive starts came this year in the Coral Challenge Cup wins over Keighley Cougars and Siddal ARLFC, whilst still part of the club’s U19 academy set up.
An intelligent playmaker, Donaghy’s first encounter with rugby league came when he found a flyer for a half-term coaching camp with Cramlington Rockets.
That lead to his enrolment onto the club’s scholarship programme and the start of a journey that has now led to a first-team senior contract. A player who is blessed with a strong running game and high levels of skill with the ball in hand, Donaghy’s talent has also seen him involved at England Youth level.
Having shown such potential before the age of 19, he is a player that generates a high level of excitement and a talent that director Denis Betts is keen to invest in.
